Scuola pratica di agroecologia Valdibella – Camporeale (SICILY, ITALY)
A practical agroecology school
On the 24th of April, the first lesson the new Valdibella Practical School of Agroecology was held by Stefano Soldati. The trainings are addressed to farmers, who want to deepen agricultural practices, within a varied scenario such as that of sustainable agriculture.
The practical school of agroecology proposes a support for basic agriculture and learning about crop management techniques with days of practical experience in the field. The school will offer a year-long programme based on the biological cycle of plants.
“I often meet many young farmers and farm operators who have not received any specific training before entering into farm management. Often there is a lack of knowledge of basic agronomic principles and sustainable farming methods,” says Massimiliano Solano, president of the Valdibella cooperative and creator of the school.
The annual programme will include three types of meetings: a basic course on converting to agroecology, which will be organised at weekends (so as not to get in the way of work in the field), training days, and days dedicated to the end consumer. The annual programme is currently being worked on and we are waiting for further updates in September from the coordinator Valeria Monti.
The program prepares students for a wide range of positions concerning conventional and organic agriculture and food systems, such as in advisory services and extension, development projects, management of agricultural and natural resources, environmental protection, and further education and research.

Therefore, alternative forms of food production and distribution are urgently needed. In the agroecology & food systems specialisation, you will come to know different approaches to sustainable food production and nutrition. The focus is on approaches from agroecology, regional value chains and fair trade relationships. The close interactions between humans and the environment are an integral part of the course. With the research groups of the ZHAW, and thanks to the collaboration with the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), you have a wide range of specialisation options to choose from.
